Following a testing-led deworming programme benefits your horse and the environment by reducing unnecessary exposure to anthelmintic drugs and decreases the wider risk of wormer resistance which is a major and growing threat.
As a practice we are keen to offer you a cost effective solution that supports you in managing your horses worm risk. Offering you the right treatments, at the right time, at the right price.

CORRECT SAMPLING AND HANDY TIPS
TESTING
To support us in reducing resistance to wormers, it is VITAL that you only worm when it is necessary. Therefore in line with CANTER (Controlling ANTiparasitic resistance in Equines Responsibly) guidelines advise we prescribe wormers on the results of lab tests.
- Test your horse regularly for worms using a faecal worm egg count (FWEC)
- Use a saliva test to check for tapeworm
- Use your vets to assess your horse’s risk of infection
DOSING
As part of the worming program we include a working kit. In your worming kit there will be a weigh tape, please use this! This is prior to worming every time as horses weights can change over the year, much like ours! If you are worried about your horses weight or unsure please call the team as we can always bring our Weighbridge to you to get an accurate weight and work with you to support your horses nutritional needs
- Weigh your horse to calculate the correct dose
- Give enough drug to treat the worm burden
- If your horse spits out some of the wormer, they may not have received the correct dose
ROTATING
This is all about changing the ammunition we use to protect our horses. Sadly worms don’t like to make our lives easy and work to out wit us and build up a resistance to our armoury. Therefore the team at Severn Edge Equine will work with you to target your attack each time.
- Rotate the active ingredients in the wormer to reduce the risk of resistance
- Alternate between wormers with different chemical classes
