Equine Gastroscopy

What Is Gastroscopy?

Gastroscopy can provide a definitive answer as to whether your horse is suffering from gastric ulcers. The lining of the stomach can be visualised by passing a 3m endoscope through the nasal passage, into the back of the throat and swallowed. The endoscope is passed down the oesophagus and into the stomach, the horse is sedated for the procedure and will usually take approximately 30 minutes. Prior to the procedure the horse will need to be starved for at least 12 hrs, this is to ensure that the stomach is empty to enable a thorough examination.

Anatomy of the Equine Stomach

The stomach is a kidney bean shape and is divided into two sections:

  • Squamous Mucosa (Non-glandular)
  • Glandular Mucosa (containing glands that secrete hydrochloric acid).

The two sections are defined by a line called the margo plicatus.

What are Gastric Ulcers?

Gastric ulcers are described as the erosion of the stomach lining due to the prolonged exposure of stomach acid. The glandular portion of the stomach is naturally in contact with stomach acid and ulceration can indicate the reduced ability of this tissue to protect itself. The squamous mucosa (non-glandular) tissue should not normally be in contact with stomach acid and are a common site for ulceration.

What are the symptoms of Gastric Ulcers?

Symptoms include:

  • Poor Condition
  • Reluctance to eat
  • Discomfort when girthing or grooming
  • Weight loss
  • Recurrent or acute colic
  • Poor performance
  • Changes in attitude or behaviour

Some horses show few or very subtle symptoms, if your horse is showing any of these symptoms please contact us for further investigation.

What happens after Gastroscopy?

Following gastroscopy, a specific treatment plan is devised based on the location, severity and type of ulceration found. Advice on changing management and feeding practice is given in order to improve gastric health and limit future ulcer development.
